The Minor Chord

Play a major chord, then move just one note down by a single semitone, and something remarkable happens: the same bright, confident sound turns moody, wistful, even sad. That one-semitone shift is the entire difference between major and minor — and once you hear it, you’ll never un-hear it again.

The recipe for a minor triad

The minor triad uses almost the same recipe as the major triad, with one number changed:

  1. Root — pick any note. Let’s use C again.
  2. Minor third — count 3 semitones up from the root (one less than the major chord’s 4). From C: C♯, D, D♯.
  3. Perfect fifth — count 7 semitones up from the root, exactly as before. From C: G.

So C minor = C, D♯, G (D♯ is often written as E♭ in this context, but it’s the same key). Compare that to C major = C, E, G. Only the middle note moved — down by one semitone — and the chord’s entire personality changed.

C major vs. C minor, side by side

This comparison is the fastest way to internalize the difference:

  • C major: C, E, G — third is 4 semitones above the root.
  • C minor: C, D♯, G — third is 3 semitones above the root.

The root and the fifth are identical in both chords. Every bit of the difference — happy versus sad, bright versus dark — lives entirely in that one middle note, the third. This is true for every root, not just C: shrink the third by one semitone from any major chord and you get its minor twin.

Why it sounds darker

Just as the major third (4 semitones) reads as open and stable to most listeners, the minor third (3 semitones) reads as introspective, tense, or melancholic. Neither sound is “better” — they’re simply two different emotional colors built from the same two building blocks (a third and a fifth), with only the size of the third deciding which color you get. Composers lean on this constantly, often shifting a single chord from major to minor mid-song to signal a change in mood without changing the melody at all.

A curiosity: the relative minor

Every major key has a “relative minor” that shares all the same 12 notes but treats a different note as home base — for example, C major and A minor use an identical set of notes, just centered differently. That’s a bigger topic for later study, but it’s worth knowing the name now: it’s why minor-key songs often feel like they’re one step away from resolving into a major sound, and vice versa.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting which direction to move. The minor third is smaller than the major third (3 semitones vs. 4), so you move the third down one semitone from major, not up.
  • Changing the fifth by accident. Only the third changes between major and minor. If your fifth isn’t still 7 semitones above the root, you’ve built something else entirely.
  • Assuming minor always sounds “bad.” Minor chords aren’t a mistake or a lesser version of major — they’re a distinct, intentional color used in an enormous amount of music you already love.
