Diminished and Augmented Chords

Major and minor chords feel like a resting place — a sound that’s comfortable to land on. Diminished and augmented chords are the opposite: they feel like they’re straining to move somewhere else. That restlessness isn’t a flaw, it’s the whole point, and composers have been using it on purpose for centuries.

The recipe for a diminished triad

A diminished chord is built by stacking two minor thirds on top of each other:

  1. Root — let’s use C again.
  2. Minor third — count 3 semitones up from the root. From C: D♯.
  3. Another minor third — count 3 more semitones up from there, which is 6 semitones total from the root. From C: F♯.

So C diminished = C, D♯, F♯ — a root, then 3, then 6 semitones total. Compare that to C minor (3 then 7): the fifth has shrunk by one more semitone, from perfect (7) to diminished (6), and that’s what gives the chord its unsettled, squeezed-in quality.

The recipe for an augmented triad

An augmented triad is diminished’s mirror image: two major thirds stacked instead of two minor thirds:

  1. Root — C again.
  2. Major third4 semitones up. From C: E.
  3. Another major third4 more semitones, or 8 semitones total from the root. From C: G♯.

So C augmented = C, E, G♯ — a root, then 4, then 8 semitones total. Where the diminished chord feels squeezed, the augmented chord feels stretched — the fifth has grown by one semitone past perfect, into strange, open territory.

Why both sound tense

Both chords avoid the perfect fifth that gives major and minor their sense of “home.” Diminished sounds anxious and unresolved — it wants to shrink further or snap back to something stable. Augmented sounds dreamlike and suspended, like it’s floating rather than standing on solid ground. Neither wants to be the last chord you hear in a piece; both create energy that pulls the ear toward whatever comes next.

Where they show up in real music

Diminished chords are common as passing chords — a brief stepping-stone between two more stable chords, used to build tension right before a resolution. Augmented chords show up most often in chromatic cadences, sliding progressions where a chord’s notes creep upward by semitones on their way to somewhere new. Neither is meant to be a destination; both are meant to create motion.

A useful symmetry in the augmented chord

Because the augmented triad is built entirely from equal 4-semitone gaps (4 and then 4 again, landing at 8), every note in the chord sounds equally plausible as “home” — C augmented (C, E, G♯), E augmented (E, G♯, C), and G♯ augmented (G♯, C, E) are all the exact same three notes, just described starting from a different one of them. Calling one of those three “the root” is really a naming convention, not something your ear could ever settle on its own: play the chord in isolation and there’s no acoustic clue telling you which note is “really” first. That symmetry is a music-theory curiosity, though — it doesn’t loosen the exercise. The game always presents augmented chords in root position and names one specific root in the prompt, so you still need to build from the exact note it gives you.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing up which direction each chord bends. Diminished shrinks the fifth (6 semitones instead of 7); augmented grows it (8 instead of 7). Keep the direction straight by remembering the third: two minor thirds shrink, two major thirds grow.
  • Forgetting the fifth is total distance, not the second step alone. The “6” and “8” above are semitones from the root, not from the middle note.
  • Expecting these chords to feel resolved. If a diminished or augmented chord sounds “right” to you, check your counting — the entire character of both is unresolved tension.
